Three or four times a year, Mercury passes the earth in its orbit. As it curves the bend, Mercury slows down and appears to stop (station) and spin backward (retrograde). In astrology, Mercury rules communication, travel, and technology, so all of these areas can go a bit crazy for the next three weeks. The reason Mercury Retrogrades affect us deeply because it’s a time of slowing down and turning our attention inward. These moments in time are when we are asked to pause and reflect before beginning a new chapter in our lives. I personally love it when Mercury is in retrograde. It gives us a chance to reflect, re-evaluate, re-organise and recharge our batteries. What other time could be better for this type of review than at the end of a year!
When Mercury retrograde is in Sagittarius, we’re not going to be sitting around in our rooms crying over all of our past mistakes, at least you’re not supposed to be. We may have to face a few things we have been running from but ultimately, what we’re moving ourselves for is our growth, not our smallness or our sorrows. Too many people use Mercury in retrograde as an excuse to wallow and blame everything on this planets movement alone. The truth is, if you are willing to do the real work, then this retrograde period is actually a time for one last look over your shoulder at the way you life has been this year. This isn’t a negative thing; whether you want to say goodbye or not, you cant actually move forward until you reflect on all that has brought you to this place.
Mercury rules communication and the transfer of information, and during this cycle it’s wise to protect all sensitive data and back it up. Since Mercury retrograde can disrupt technology, take special precautions with your digital data. Back up all your important files and photos to the cloud. Mercury rules contracts, so think before you ink any deals. Either wrap up important negotiations before the cycle starts, or wait to sign documents until after Mercury goes direct. Check and re-check all travel plans. Make extra time for any unexpected delays.
Don’t start anything new. Focus on activities that start with the prefix “re-,” which means to go back. Review all your contracts before you sign. Renew your commitments, rather than making new ones. Prepare to repeat yourself often. Reunite with old friends, redecorate a room, rekindle a romance.
That last one should only be attempted with extreme caution. Mercury retrograde can bring back an old Love, but often it’s for the purpose of closure, not necessarily because this is the one that got away. Don’t be surprised if you get a Facebook friend request from someone you dated back when or a long forgotten childhood friend to. In this sense, its primarily about closure. You will find that there is nothing new to learn from these people or situations.
And there you have it. It’s actually a magical time if you re-tune yourself to the flow of Mercury and her movements.
